Memphis Minnie - Killer Diller Blues

Blues Corner... Minnie!

Memphis Minnie (1897-1973), an American songwriter and performer, who was the only female blues artist considered a match to male contemporaries as both a singer and an instrumentalist!

Eldin Burton, Sonatina für Flöte und Klavier, 1.Satz: Allegretto grazioso

Today's Classical Corner... supposedly Burton's idle published gem!

Eldin Burton (1913- 1979) was an American pianist who had ambitions as a composer, and took the first steps by enrolling in a composition course at the Juilliard School in New York. His Sonatina for flute & piano is his best-known work; it is an arrangement of a piano piece written as an exercise on a Juilliard School composition course! The Sonatina later won the Composition Contest of the New York Flute Club in 1948. Burton gave the first performance with the flautist Samuel Baron, and as the contest’s first prize was an offer of publication by Schirmer, the work survived in the repertoire. His flute concerto, written later, was never published and he seems to have given up composing, so the Sonatina is just about his only work still in the repertoire nowadays. Burton later took a job with Schirmer and seems not have have composed very much more.

שלום חנוך - אדם בתוך עצמו

One...
from one truly wondrous album (and a truly awful cover).

Battle - Scarlatti. Con Tromba Sola - Mio Tesoro Per Te Moro

Today's Classical Corner... Beautiful Battle's Scarlatti (with Wynton, of course)!

Petro Alessandro Scarlatti (Italian composer, 1660-1725) was especially important in the development of opera (as a liberation of dramatic expression), and considered founder of the Neapolitan school. Arrived in Rome in 1672, studied with Carissimi, and wrote his first opera in 1679. Engaged by Queen Christina of Sweden, then living in Rome, as choirmaster and conductor for her for her private court, then conductor to Viceroy of Naples, and from 1708 alternated between Rome and Naples for the rest of life, in various court and church appointments.

Kathleen and Wynton are not that old.

John Tavener - The Lamb

Blessedly typically breathtaking John Tavener...

Little lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee,
Gave thee life, and bid thee feed
By the stream and o’er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing, woolly, bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice?
   Little lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?

   Little lamb, I’ll tell thee;
   Little lamb, I’ll tell thee:
He is callèd by thy name,
For He calls Himself a Lamb.
He is meek, and He is mild,
He became a little child.
I a child, and thou a lamb,
We are callèd by His name.
   Little lamb, God bless thee!
   Little lamb, God bless thee!

Stephanie Mills-Never Knew Love Like This Before

When this was a hit on the airwaves, I was already a seasoned busboy at Bubba's Deli, on Bustleton Ave.
Not
a very positive period of time, but being so far removed from then,
this song makes it seem ever sweet, especially with lyrics filled with
youthful passion and enthusiasm.
Right this minute, I could definitely go for one of Bubba's excellent freshly baked bagels!

Barney Kessel - Autumn Leaves

Unbelievable style and feel, like he's the tree on which these autumn
leaves sway back and forth, until letting the soft wind carry them
elsewhere, as eventually they fall to rest gently on the earth.

A sure-fire Weekend Playlister for me.

Without modern leadership with an open mind for acceptance and concessions, music will never fully free any of us. However, until then we can make progress, however slow and painful. Art and music are a very good idea for reaching out, connecting and reconnecting.

Kevin Ayers / John Cale / Brian Eno / Nico - June 1, 1974

Holiday Playlist...

Kevin Ayers & Friends - the 'ACNE' album (1974) [Almost-full live show]

a live album of songs performed at the Rainbow Theatre in London on the
titular date. The album is officially attributed to Kevin Ayers, John
Cale, Brian Eno and Nico, although other well-known musicians, including
Mike Oldfield and Robert Wyatt, also contributed to the concert. It is
also informally known as the ACNE album, i.e. "Ayers, Cale, Nico, Eno".
The cover photograph was taken by Mick Rock in the foyer of the Rainbow
Theatre shortly before the concert began. The bemused stare between John
Cale (right) and Kevin Ayers (left) is explained by the fact that Cale
had caught Ayers sleeping with his wife the night before the show.

Holiday Playlist...
Otradovice (1600-1676) was a Czech Catholic aristocrat, poet, composer, hymn writer, organist and choir leader of the early Baroque era. He is also known as Adam Michna, and during his life as Adamus Wenceslaus Michna de Ottradowicz. He was the most important Czech composer and poet of the early Baroque who initiated the development of Czech art in that era and became a significant inspiration for Czech artists of future generations.
It is said that Michna is as important for Czechs as Heinrich Schütz for Germans and Claudio Monteverdi for Italians.

Lettuce - Fly

Lettuce from Boston ain't neva eva stale!

Tchaikovsky - The Seasons - October ("Autumn Song")

Today's Classical Corner... October!
October is a season in The
Seasons, one of a set of 12 pieces for solo piano, by Russian composer
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Each piece is the characteristic of a
different month of the year in the northern hemisphere. The work is also
sometimes heard in orchestral arrangements.
Individual excerpts
have always been popular – Troika (November) was a favorite encore of
Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Barcarolle (June) was enormously popular and
appeared in numerous arrangements (for orchestra, violin, cello,
clarinet, harmonium, guitar and even mandolin).

Marketa Irglova - "Fortune Teller" (Full Album Stream)
