The band knew they had a success with "Turning Japanese", so much so that they waited until their 2nd single before releasing it, fearing that if they released it as their first they would become "one-hit wonders". They never matched its success.
"It could have been (turning) Portuguese, Lebanese, anything that fitted with that phrase. It has nothing to do with the Japanese...The first time the idea of masturbation came up was when we were touring America. It was written about that 'turning Japanese' was an English phrase for masturbation, which it wasn't." - David Fenton, the song's author.

on an incident from his childhood: a murder in 1865, the victim of which
was a Leoncavallo family servant, Gaetano Scavello. The murderer was
Gaetano D'Alessandro, with his brother Luigi an accomplice to the crime.
The incident resulted from a series of perceived romantic entanglements
involving Scavello, Luigi D'Alessandro, and a village girl with whom
both men were infatuated. Leoncavallo's father, a judge, was the
presiding magistrate over the criminal investigation.

"The band was put together in 1974 with help from Fleetwood Mac manager Clifford Davis and drummer Mick Fleetwood, to perform as Fleetwood Mac on a US tour because the existing Fleetwood Mac were not in a position to fulfil outstanding contractual obligations. However, Fleetwood did not join the tour as planned, and later denied any knowledge or involvement, and partway through the tour it became obvious to audiences that there was no original member of Fleetwood Mac in the band, and the tour collapsed. Bass player Paul Martinez claimed, "Mick Fleetwood pulled out at the last minute claiming not to know who we were!"

Today's Classic Soul Corner.. Chi-lites' Toby.
Man, i love this group.
Chicago-based quartet was one of the few from the 70s period not to come from Memphis or Philly. This was the title track from their 1974 release.
"The song should have made this LP financially viable, but as enchanting and beautiful as it is, the tale was morbid (Toby gets killed) and it didn't burn any rubber on the charts. The insightful "There Will Never Be Any Peace (Until God Is Seated at the Conference Table)" was also expected to do some serious damage, but didn't fare as well as "Toby." Both were excellent examples of lead singer, writer and producer Eugene Record's immense creativity. A remake of Roberta Flack's "First Time (Ever I Saw Your Face)" rivaled the original. The public didn't think much of this release, as it only dented Billboard's Top 200 LP Chart at #181." - All Music

The first recorded performances, in 1970, of Eddie and Charlie Palmieri as bandleaders, joining forces with a couple of Latinos that included Andy Gonzales, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, and some white guys and taught them how to play a music that was equal parts Cuban Mambo, American Soul via Stax/Volt, Blues, Funkadelic-style Rock, Pop-Jazz, and harmonic and instrumental arrangements every bit as sophisticated as Burt Bacharach's or Henry Mancini's or even Stan Kenton's.
