Asha Puthli - Space Talk (1976)
Super fine, this thing... like a spaced-out and thoroughly-funkified Kate Bush!!!
Béla Bartók at the piano Sonatina
Today's Classical Corner... Bartok's Sonatina.
A piece for solo piano, written in 1915, by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók.
Initially
entitled Sonatina on Romanian folk tunes, it is based on folk tunes he
collected in his neighbouring country Romania, which, even though he
proclaimed Hungarian folk music was clearly superior, was a direct
source of inspiration all along his active years.

Reckoner - Radiohead (1080p)
"The funny thing was that to be honest the guitar on it was really
influenced by... I went to see the Chili Peppers a few times and I
really like the way John Frusciante plays. And uh... it was sort of a
homage to that, in my sort of clunky ‘can't–really-pick' kind of way."

Max Roach Trio - Hope So Elmo
Today's Classic Jazz Corner... Hasaan.
Amazingly, this Max Roach Trio release, recorded in 1964, and featuring pianist/composer Hasaan Ibn Ali, represents the sole recording ever which exhibits Hasaan Ibn Ali's virtuosity - very advanced and unique style that fell somewhere between Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor.
Just listen to this, and you'll see where it travels, and takes you along with it. :)

Giacinto Scelsi: Quattro Pezzi per Orchestra (intégrale de l'oeuvre)
Weekend Playlist...
This is Scelsi's most famous work, written in 1959, and arguably one of the most pioneering works of the 20th century. Each of the four movements sticks rigorously to a single note, the succession being in the keys of F, B, Ab, and A. As is normal in Scelsi's orchestral music, the instruments are concentrated in the low registers and include percussion. The brief 1st movement presents the melodic material - and it is indeed melodic, due to shading, rhythm and instrumental timbre. After the high drama of the second movement, the third (omitting percussion) has an ethereal quality about it which hangs beyond time in the slowly decaying sound of its final moments. The fourth movement has an extreme finality, with cadences punctuated by percussive outbursts, as if to say: I am sound.

A touching song by a great composer (he's the one sitting on the concrete bench toward the end of the video). In the video is a very famous Israeli musical/cultural icon, Itzhak Klepter, a gifted composer/guitarist with a rich and lengthy resume, who has seen better days. The song talks about 'being fearful of but willing to love, if and when it comes'.

Fauré: Sanctus (from Requiem) (John Rutter; The Cambridge Singers)
Today's Classical Corner... Faure's Requiem.
This is the third movement, but it is not at all less equal in power and beauty, as a competed work.
Written for orchestra, organ, mixed chorus and two soloists (soprano and baritone), and performed in Latin, it was composed in the late 1880s, revised it in the 1890s, and finally completed in 1900.

Francesco Maria Veracini 6 Sonatas for flute and bass
Weekend Playlist...
Surprisingly, Veracini's music went unheard for many decades of the
Baroque revival, it may be because it doesn't look like much on the
page, and therefore it requires a player who can apply improvised
ornamentation convincingly. Here there
is the added challenge of making violin music sound good on a recorder,
which recorder player, Karsten Erik Ose, surely does.

Lennie Tristano - full album
Holiday Playlist...
At its release, the album was controversial
for its innovative use of technology, with Tristano overdubbing piano
and manipulating tape speed for effect on the first four tracks. The
final five songs are live recordings.
Felix Mendelssohn - Choral Works - Hora Est-Te Deum-Ave Maria
Holiday Playlist... :)
Mendelssohn was born into a prominent Jewish family, although initially he was raised without religion and was later baptised as a Reformed Christian.
In this recording...
1. Hora est, for 16 voices & organ in G minor/A major
2. Te Deum for soloists, chorus & organ in A major (Morning Service)
3. Ave Maria, sacred piece for soloists, chorus & continuo in A major, Op. 23/2
Of all the nearly forgotten music by Mendelssohn, the most nearly completely forgotten is his music for chorus. Only his songs come close to being as almost entirely ignored, but because a few of them have earned a place in the recital hall, even they have a more prominent place in the repertoire. This 10-disc Brilliant set of Mendelssohn's complete choral works featuring the Chamber Choir of Europe under Nicol Matt addresses this problem even though it may not solve it. The performances are uniformly excellent. The Choir has a smooth tone and superb diction and Matt elicits from them polished balanced and ardent interpretations. Despite the dearth of comparisons, these performances with their clean textures, light tempos, and devout tone are surely as close to definitive as is possible to imagine. For some listeners, of course, this may not be enough to redeem Mendelssohn's heartfelt yet stolid music from obscurity. For others with more open minds, however, this set may serve to introduce a body of sacred works that certainly exceeds any other similar body of works from the same period in terms of skill and sincerity. Though a bit recessed, Brilliant's digital sound is cool and clear.

J. S. Bach-W. Kempff - Transcription for piano of Siciliano from Sonata ...
And it's beautious Kempff solo Piano version!
Both are highly flowery, carefree and nostalgic, and... carry you away far, far.
J.S. Bach~Flute Sonata No 2~Siciliano
Today's Classical Corner... Bach!
No copy of this sonata has survived in Bach's hand, yet that's true of
all but one of Bach's flute sonatas. Some musicologists suggest that
this is the work, at least in part, of C.P.E. Bach or some other
composer, yet the authorship has not been disputed seriously enough for
this light, entertaining piece to be banned from the Bach catalog. Here,
the composer takes note of the emerging galant style of the 1730s, with
light textures, simple harmonies, and highly ornamented melodies. The
sonata falls into three movements, the pattern familiar from Vivaldi
concertos rather than from the more sober, four-movement church and
chamber sonatas of the immediately preceding decades. (Bach continued to
employ this latter style in several of his other sonatas from this same
period.) The first movement, marked Allegro moderato, opens with a
keyboard introduction obsessed with a little rolling, melodic figure.
The keyboard maintains the basic rhythm of this material throughout the
movement (and enjoys further short, solo passages, ritornello style),
but the flute offers more sustained, lyrical material. In the slow
movement, a Siciliano, the harpsichord is now reduced to a more
simplified, tinkling accompaniment role, while the flute plays a
particularly haunting melody making good use of the Siciliano's typical
dotted pattern. The harpsichord becomes a far more equal partner in the
concluding Allegro, an extended movement by the standards of its
predecessors. The mood is cheerful, and the keyboard writing remains
fairly independent of—yet always complementary to—the flute part. The
movement also holds touches of counterpoint that move even the most
doubtful musicologists to concede that this may, after all, be the work
of J.S. Bach.
