Today's Classical Corner... the effervescence of Brahms' Intermezzo!

think well-described by MFA Student Seth Horvitz: The opening of
Brahms’s Intermezzo in B-flat Minor (Opus 117, No. 2) is astonishing.
The piece is off and running from the start, suggesting multiple tonal
regions. Brahms displays his mastery of ambiguity, that makes us feel as
if we are being led in different directions simultaneously,
overlappingly. The twists and turns in the harmony rarely give the
listener any sense of solid ground. Glenn Gould said he liked the Brahms
Intermezzi for their “atmosphere of improvisation.” Perhaps the most
highly developed improvisations achieve a kind of multi-layered
integration that “composed” music can never quite reach."
The last sentence is profound, hence Jazz is king. :)

Weldon Irvine was a most under-the-radar artist (musician, composer, playwright, poet, pianist and organist), who blended wonderfully blues, soul, jazz, and funk. The one time bandleader for Nina Simone, Irvine wrote the lyrics for the song "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black, which some considered the "official" Civil Rights anthem. This track is one of tunes from his debut album as leader, Liberated Brother.

This is from his collection of 'Lyric Pieces' piano miniatures. Grieg hated the Academic discipline of study, yet he still achieved very good grades in most areas, the exception being the organ, which was mandatory for piano students at the time.

Pussy Riot's first song in English is dedicated to Eric Garner and the words he repeated eleven times before his death. This song is for Eric and for all those from Russia to America and around the globe who suffer from state terror - killed, choked, perished because of war and state sponsored violence of all kinds - for political prisoners and those on the streets fighting for change. We stand in solidarity.
Pussy Riot's Masha and Nadya are being buried alive in the Russian riot police uniforms that are worn during the violent clashes of police and the protesters fighting for change in Russia. A pack of "Russian Spring" brand cigarettes is on the ground at the beginning. "Russian Spring" is a term used by those who are in love with Russia's aggressive militant actions in Ukraine, and the cigarettes are a real thing.
"I Can't Breathe" was recorded in New York in December 2014 during the protests against police brutality together with Pussy Riot, Richard Hell, Nick Zinner, Andrew Wyatt, Shahzad Ismaily (The Ceramic Dog) and Russian bands Jack Wood and Scofferlane.

This Georg Friedrich Händel work (Halle Germany 1685 - London 1759) is one of the peaks of his operatic production by Julius Caesar in Egypt (London 1724). The play follows the usual scheme Baroque Aria - Recitative dry, but the magic argument makes it possible to include dance scenes, thus making clear the influence of French opera. It should be noted that the work was performed at the reopening of Covent Garden and the entrepreneur, John Rich, had hired the ballet company of French Marie Salle; perhaps this is the reason that in every act of the play a number of ballet, not always justified by the plot is included.
The libretto by Antonio Marchi, is based on the songs VI and VII of the poem by Ludovico Ariosto's "Orlando Furioso" and a libretto by Riccardo Broschi (brother of Farinelli) entitled "The Island of Alcina". The premiere took place on 16 April 1735 at the Theater at Covent Garden in London.

These are actually 2 of 6 tracks lumped together under the title Afro Cuban Jazz Suite, and credited to Charlie Parker. That is tragic in a way because Machito (born as Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo and known as Frank Grillo) was the real innovator in establishing and fusing together the music style that has come to be known as Afto-Cuban Jazz.
Of course Parker plays on this, and regardless of misplaced credits, this is an historic recording because it included some of the top Latin musicians collaborating with some top Jazz musicians and pulling off a fusion of the two styles.

Apala (or Akpala) is a musical genre, originally derived from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. It is a percussion-based style that developed in the late 1930s, when it was used to wake worshipers after fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. The rhythms of Apala grew more complex over time, influenced by Cuban music and eventually became quite popular in Nigeria.
It is distinct from, older than, and much more difficult to master than Fuji music. Although Fuji music remains the most important form of traditional music amongst Yorubas in Nigeria, Apala is still very popular amongst Muslims of the Yoruba tribe.
