Today's Classic Rock corner... Long Island's Mountain!
The Corner comes early, and with quite a tragic story.
The song is a reference to the experience of Owen Coffin, a young seaman on the Nantucket whale-ship Essex, which in 1820 was rammed and sunk by a sperm whale (Nantucket Sleighride). In the aftermath of the wreck, Coffin was shot and eaten by his shipmates. The story was recorded by its First Mate, Owen Chase, one of 8 survivors, in his 1821 Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex.
