Nana Kwame Ampadu & his African Brothers Band — Kofi Nkrabea
Despite the sound quality, it's worth it. it's a legend from Ghana!
Nana
Ampadu of Ghana formed his African Brothers Band in 1963 as one of the
many guitar-based highlife groups that rose in Ghana in the '60s. The
trademarks of the group are their adherence to performing only their own
songs (as opposed to the common practice of simply covering other
groups' compositions), as well as putting forth a political message
within each of their songs. During the '70s, they became one of the more
innovative bands on the scene, as they experimented with influences
from other areas, including the rumba, reggae, and a form of music meant
to incorporate all of the African forms, Afro-hili, which was also made
as a competitor to Fela Kuti's Afrobeat. After some time, they have
returned to a purer form of guitar highlife, though hundreds of albums
(mostly in Ghana) can attest to their longevity and creativity.
Lisa Gerrard Zbigniew Preisner - Lament
Must have been quite unbelievable to hear this at its premiere!
L'hôtel particulier - Serge Gainsbourg
So, so very good!
and no wonder it sounded so 'familiar' to me: it's got Jean-Claude Vannier's signature sound all over it, and i know him from 'L'Enfant Assasin des Mouches' - itself, a true masterpiece!
Clearly this Gainsbourg album is 70's French orchestral funk at its super finest.
(but i'm open to any and all other examples. please.).

)
Historic Nostalgia...
2 of 2 from Eddy Duchin.
Duchin's 1938
release of the Louis Armstrong song "Ol' Man Mose", sung by Patricia
Norman, caused a minor scandal at the time with the lyric "bucket" being
heard as "f*ck it."
Some listeners conclude that there is no
vulgarism uttered, while others are convinced that Norman does say
"f*ck" (which would explain one of the band members laughing delightedly
after Norman seems to chirp, "Awww, f*ck it... f*ck-f*ck-f*ck it!").
The
"scandalous" lyrics caused the record to zoom to #2 on the Billboard
charts, resulting in sales of 170,000 copies when sales of 20,000 were
considered a blockbuster. The song was banned after its release in Great
Britain.

Rádio Tarifa - Temporal
Today's Cultural Corner... Spain. well, Tarifa!
"Radio Tarifa is a symbolic name and it really sums up the music of the group. Tarifa is the southernmost point of Spain. If you turn the dial of a radio there you can pick up sounds from North Africa, you hear the Arabic early morning call-to-prayer; from there you reach out into the whole of Mediterranean Europe, to the Middle East, and beyond to the Americas. And that’s us and our music—a meeting point between all the cultures that have passed through, and continue to come through, that part of Spain." - Faín Dueñas
The traditional Flamenco song “Temporal” comes from Radio Tarifa’s 1998' album which explores the roots of flamenco with a cast of 14 musicians. Following a short introduction on percussion, double bass and Spanish guitar, the majestic contrast between Benjamín Escoriza’s passionate and earthy voice and an ethereal jazz-like solo on the bansuri elevates the song to soaring heights. And while the Indian transverse bamboo flute is not an instrument traditionally used in flamenco music, it nevertheless hints superbly at the Romani/Gypsy roots of the style and exemplifies Radio Tarifa’s experimental sound.
