Johann Stamitz - Sinfonia Pastorale in D major, Op. 4, No. 2 (Wolf D4) -...
Today's Classical Corner... Stamitz, the Mannheim's Czech forefatherfounder!
Composer
and violinist, his music falls between Baroque and Classical, and his
two sons, Carl and Anton Stamitz, were scarcely less important composers
of the Mannheim school. Indeed, good genes go a long way.

Julien Marchal - INSIGHT - I
Lovely.
One of four short vignettes on the piano recorded at home.
By deliberately capturing the mechanical sound of the piano hammers and damper pedal, Julien Marchal notes that "the objective is to immerse the listener into the sonic environment of the piano. Musical aesthetics matters less than the overall live and organic sound produced."

Always helps to be a singer, in order to compose for singers - even if the language to be sung is not your own. :)
the outcome is generally memorable, as is the case here.

MEDIEVAL SONGS FROM LOVE AND LOSS - GILLES BINCHOIS.wmv
Holiday Playlist...
Focusing on the central notion – one very dear to the troubadours
themselves – of “love from afar”, this new programme leads the listener
through that maze of amorous emotions linked with the sense of
absence (be it as a result of the crusades, owing to war, to
tournaments, or to paternal bans...); the route chosen here is an
unconventional one, traversing differing styles and epochs, with music
from villages as well as from the courts, an immersion in the vast world
of song and in the company of its earliest masters - the troubadours,
the trouvères - and of its ageless servants: the traditional
singer-poets from Occitania and from Spain...

Today's Classic Rock Corner... DP!
Hey, due to intelligent editing,
you might even notice a bass player in the mix; and if it wasn't for
Lord's solo, you probably wouldn't have seen the keyboardist either.
The bassist does tear it up.

Gash - Angel And Mother .1972
Really excellent! the verses are reminiscent of Dylan's Lay Lady Lay
(which came before) and Adam Ant's Wonderful, which came much later. Great tune, great production.
Robert Plant | 'Ship of Fools' | Official Music Video
No amount of hairspray can outlast the music. and a good thing that is!
But the can from which it came is a whole other thing, and that isn't good.
By the way, there is a section in this song that always reminds me of Harrison's Long, Long, Long. actually, it more than 'reminds' me of it, but hey Robert has written plenty of other stuff that sounds very, very original so i'll let this slide. :)
Jim Pepper - Witchi Tia To
Turn up the volume, peeps... it's Today's Classic Jazz Corner, and one of my favorite tracks/albums ever. Hope you like it too.
RIP, Native American legend Jim Pepper! you did a lot for us humans.
from
Wikipedia: "Witchi Tai To" is derived from a peyote song of the Native
American Church. Pepper learned it from his grandfather, and is the most
famous example of this hybrid musical style. The song has been covered
by many other artists including Harper's Bizarre, Ralph Towner (with and
without Oregon), Jan Garbarek, Pete Wyoming Bender, Brewer &
Shipley, Larry Smith with members of The Bonzo Dog Band, Yes and Keith
Moon under the pseudonym of Topo D. Bill, an unreleased version recorded
by The Supremes in 1969, and also covered in 1973 by Quebec
singer-songwriter Robert Charlebois, himself of partly American-Indian
descent.

R. Schumann - Adagio & Allegro, Op. 70
Today's Classical Corner... Schumann - Intent on improving House Music!
This was actually written for a Horn, which i do love. But, in fact i dare say it sounds better on Oboe!
1849
was Schumann's most productive year in terms of number of compositions,
but it was also extremely rich in terms of the variety of works, which
included choral pieces, songs, piano pieces, works for soloist(s) and
orchestra, and several chamber pieces for solo instrument and piano. In a
few of these works he made use of the relatively new valve horn, which
had begun to show up in orchestras in the 1830s. One of Schumann's goals
at the time was to create significant music that amateurs could use to
further their skills on their instruments with what was called
Hausmusik: meaningful, artistic music that they could play in private,
at home. The Adagio & Allegro for horn and piano, Op. 70, is one of
these works
Björk - Scatterheart - Music Video Edit
a small beautiful reminder to be thankful for what you do have.
Elżbieta Towarnicka - Kicy bidy i bokha (Ile bied, ile głodów...)
Poland is Today's Culture Corner...
and comes early and strong. WOW.
Well known in the world Polish opera diva Elżbieta Towarnicka, soprano, sings a song composed by Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz, to the poem "How Many Poverties, How Many Hungers".
It is written by a Gypsy poet Papusza, who without any education wrote her poems in the Roma language after learning the alphabet by herself. At the beginning of the 50s another poet, Jerzy Ficowski, helped her to gather her poems into the album Papusza's Harps.
