Brahms - Symphony no 5

Today's Classical Corner.... Brahm's 5th!

Actually, this is String Quintet #2 in GMaj, a work Brahms published in 1890, intended to be (a symphony, and) his last piece of music, though he later produced a number of piano pieces and the two sonatas for clarinet or viola and piano.

Brahms has been described as an agnostic and a humanist. The devout Catholic Antonín Dvořák wrote in a letter: "Such a man, such a fine soul – and he believes in nothing, believes in nothing!"

Another funny story, Edward Elgar said, "I look at Brahms' 3rd Symphony, and I feel like a pygmy."
