Today's Culture Corner... The Songbird of Wassoulou!
Malian vocalist/instrumentalist, Oumou Sangaré, is the daughter of singer Aminata Diakité, and specializes in Wassoulou music. Wassoulou is a historical region south of the Niger River, where the music descends from age-old traditional song, often accompanied by a calabash. Performed mostly by women, recurring passionate difficult lyrical themes are childbearing, fertility, and polygamy.
