There were many rumors and gossip about how it was even possible. Many bassists were baffled and thought he had stumbled across an amazing technique and many tried to discover it themselves, whilst others doubted him and thought it was manipulated in the studio. The former was the truth. Jaco later played the song live and even played the song over a phone recording to a music journalist who had previous criticized that it can't be possible as so many professional bass players couldn't work out how you could do it.
The key to the chord was a mixture of technique and also his incredibly large hands.
